Custom surfboard shaping isn't exactly what people think of when the Cleveland
production industry comes to mind. Northeastern Ohio is not exactly the topic of
conversation of surfers for their next surf destination either. The Great Lakes region,
U.S. as well as Canada, does have a small, but growing surf community. Since the
1960's there have even been a few surfboard shapers and I happen to be one of them.
I started shaping surfboards in 2000. Before that, I was doing ding repair for local
surfers because, well, who in northeastern Ohio is going to fix a surfboard. After
having repaired every individual aspect of surfboard construction, I thought I'd try to
make one from scratch. It worked. As tedious as the first one was, I truely enjoied
the the creative process and the end product is somthing you can actually test and
enjoy. I made more and before I knew it, people were asking me to make them a
surfboard. In 2010 I have 20 years surfing and ding repair experience and will have
been shaping as a hobby for about 10 years.
